Hotfixes, Service Packs & PEPs/Patches

Definitions

Hotfix: A Microsoft Security related software modification that is put out on a scheduled basis unless the need for a fast fix or the lack of need causes a change to the schedule.  Hotfixes typically address one or a few security issues.  The Hotfixes are rated for their importance (Critical, Important, Moderate).

Service Pack (SP1): Service Pack (SP1) – A major Microsoft software update, comprising previous security fixes and other updates.  Not to be installed until validated by Nortel.

PEP or Patch: Nortel Software Modifications. There are several Versions:

PEPs: PEPs are not put out on a schedule they are installed as needed. Because each system is unique, there have been occasions when a PEP led to new issues.  Our philosophy is the same as with major software releases; we won’t put it on until it has had some time in the field. PLEASE

NOTE: Nortel has PEPs for all equipment (not just servers).  PEPs have been around for as long as software has been used (though not always called a PEP). They may or may not apply to a given system as the feature use or system configuration may not be the same as the original system/feature use.

Super PEP: Super PEPs, often referred to as SUs, usually combine several fixes compared to PEPs which typically only address a few or one issue.

Designer PEP: Designer PEPs are made specifically for a particular site or customer and are not tested or released to general public.
